Finding Your Spirit Animal

Throughout history, various cultures and societies have held the belief that animals possess unique spiritual significance and that each individual has at least one personal spirit animal that guides and protects them.

The concept of a spirit animal, also known as a totem animal or power animal, is deeply rooted in indigenous traditions, shamanic practices, and contemporary spiritual beliefs. Connecting with your spirit animal can offer insight, wisdom, and guidance on your life journey, especially in the spiritual aspects of your life.

Indigenous cultures around the world have long held strong beliefs in the existence of spirit animals. Examples include Native American totem animals and the Australian Aboriginal Dreamtime. While it is commonly held that spirit animals were only a practice of Native American tradition, this is a misperception. Pretty much all cultures throughout the world have had the practice at one time or another. The role of spirit animals in these cultures varied from guiding individuals to protecting tribes and communities.

Shamanism and Animal Allies

Shamanism is another realm where spirit animals play a crucial role. Shamans communicate with spirit animals during their rituals and healing practices. Shamans first establish a connection with their spirit animals, then rely on their guidance as they travel to the Otherworld for healing and wisdom. Shamans also rely on their spirit animals as teachers, companions, and healers. Hopefully, it goes without saying that our ancient Druid Ancestors were the shamans of the Celtic world, using the power and guidance of their spirit animal allies to journey to other realms.

New Age spirituality and self-help movements have incorporated the concept of spirit animals into their practices, but it has also long been a practice of Druids, both ancient and modern, and of other Pagan traditions. Anyone who has read the Irish, Welsh, and Scottish sagas knows that the practice of taking a spirit animal was widely held at one time among our Druid Ancestors. If you walk the Druid path, then you are probably already familiar with this connection to what our Ancestors practiced.

There are many potential benefits of integrating at least one spirit animal into your personal growth and spiritual development. We’ll discuss some of these benefits later in the book, but for now, the chief among these are guidance and wisdom.

What is a “Spirit Animal?”

What exactly is a spirit animal? Some believe that they are actual, living entities from the spirit realm, while others may believe that they are merely archetypal entities with no actual existence outside our own psyches. Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter which view you take as long as you find the concept useful to you.

It is my belief that each person has at least one specific spirit animal. My own experience with various and multiple animal guides throughout my lifetime led me to arrive at the concepts expressed in this book. Many people have multiple spirit animal guides throughout their lifetimes, and this book is my attempt to create a coherent template for understanding our animal allies and integrating them into our spiritual paths when they make themselves known.

Spirit animals reflect the qualities, traits, and energies that resonate with an individual. Some amplify traits we already possess, while others are there to teach us traits that we lack. For this reason and others, spirit animals can change or evolve over a person’s lifetime. Their energies can ebb and flow within our lives as we learn and grow along with them.

The Animal Wisdom Directory reviews some of the symbolic meanings and energies associated with different animals, but this list is by no means exhaustive or complete. How to interpret the presence and messages of your spirit animal is ultimately up to you. The descriptions in this book are merely suggestions. As always, take what is useful and leave the rest.

Dreams, visions, and intuition have an important role to play in discovering and working with your spirit animal. The archetypal energies spirit animals impart are energies that reside in our unconscious minds, deep within what the psychoanalyst Carl Jung called the Collective Unconscious. As such, dreams, visions, and intuition are the only way to work with these energies, and thus to make the unconscious conscious. Don’t neglect these important aspects of your spiritual life!

Inner exploration and self-awareness are also important in the search for your spirit animal. When looking for your spirit animal, remember the symbolism of animals in dreams and their relevance to your spiritual journey. Keep a dream journal to track recurring animal symbols. If an animal frequently shows up in your dream life, notice where it is and what it is doing. Is it trying to tell you something? If so, it could be a power animal introducing itself to you.

Animal allies may also present themselves to you in the physical world as part of your spiritual journey. Do you find yourself attracted to certain animals? Do certain animals seem to follow you whenever you go out into the woods? If so, what could they be trying to tell you?

Shamanic journeying is also a method for connecting with your spirit animal. If you have experience with shamanic journeying, you may use such a rite to ask your spirit animal to reveal itself to you. If you do not have experience with shamanic journeying, you may contact a shaman for assistance.

You might also try creating a ritual or ceremony to invoke the presence of your spirit animal. You can use guided meditations and visualizations to aid in your quest. Many such guided recordings are available online.

Establishing an ongoing relationship with your spirit animal is crucial to success. Meditation techniques can be useful for connecting with your inner self and your animal spiritual guides. If you don’t already have a meditation technique or practice, now is a good time to start developing one.

Communicate with your animal allies through meditation, dreams, and symbolism using active listening and open-mindedness. Learn to see and hear what is there, and not merely what you wish to see.
Your spirit animal can offer guidance in various aspects of your life. Seek advice and wisdom from your spirit animal in times of need. When you do so, you will maximize the potential for personal growth and transformation through this connection.

You may also find it useful to use symbols and objects to honor and connect with your spirit animal. The creation of talismans, amulets, and artwork representing your spirit animal will help you to be successful in this endeavor. Many shamans of old, including our Druid Ancestors, used masks and feathered cloaks to emulate their spirit animals. These symbols can serve as reminders of our connections to our spirit animals and as sources of strength.

Cultural Appropriation

Respecting the cultural and indigenous origins of spirit animals should also not be neglected.

Appropriation can lead to misrepresentation and harm. All indigenous cultures throughout the world have traditions of connecting with spirit animals, so you will get the best results by using the methods of your Ancestors rather than borrowing from other cultures. It is significant to learn from all cultures and to support indigenous communities, but not to steal or “borrow” from them. You will get the best results by connecting with your own ancestral traditions. Mutual respect is the key to healthy spiritual and human relationships.

Connecting with your own spirit animal can also promote ethical treatment of animals and their habitats. Don’t forget to explore the ethical implications of using animal symbolism and imagery in your personal spiritual practices when working with your own spirit animal.

For example, if one of your spirit animals is a bird of some kind, be aware that the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) prohibits the taking (including killing, capturing, selling, trading, and transporting) of protected migratory bird species without prior authorization by the Department of the Interior, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This includes taking things like feathers and bones, even if you find them on the ground and did not actually kill a wild animal for them. While it might be nice to have a wand made of your spirit bird’s feathers or bones, it may also be illegal.

When we become aware of these ethical and legal issues, it encourages responsible and sustainable relationships with the natural world. Such relationships can help strengthen your connection with your animal allies both in the spiritual realm and in the natural realm.

Discovering and connecting with your spirit animal offers the potential for greater self-awareness, personal growth, and a deeper connection to the natural world. It also fosters empathy and stewardship for the environment in general and your spirit animals in particular.

When you connect with your spirit animal, you may come to realize that the journey itself is as valuable as the destination. The quest for a spirit animal is a lifelong and evolving process. To focus too much on the final destination is to miss the joy and the wisdom to be gained along the way.

The concept of spirit animals offers a unique and enriching pathway to self-discovery and spiritual growth. While it is deeply rooted in indigenous traditions, it continues to evolve and adapt to contemporary spiritual practices.

The journey to find your animal allies is a deeply personal and transformative experience, rich with symbolism and the potential for profound connections with the natural world. It is essential, however, to approach this practice with respect, authenticity, and ethical considerations to ensure that it remains a meaningful and enriching journey for all who seek it.

Finding Your Spirit Animal

So, how do you go about finding your own spirit animal?

If you don’t already have an animal guide, here are some ways of finding one. Ask yourself the following questions and see if your animal guide reveals itself to you:

  • Is there a particular animal that you find yourself drawn to?
  • When alone in the woods, is there a certain animal you find yourself looking for?
  • What animal do you enjoy learning about?
  • Does a particular animal keep showing up in your dreams?
  • Have you ever been bitten, chased, or attacked by a particular animal?
  • Have you ever been devoured or attacked by an animal in a dream?
  • Do you collect paintings, statues, stuffed animals, or trinkets of a particular animal?
  • If you’ve ever gone hiking or just out for a walk, were you followed by a particular animal?
  • Do any of the things on this list happen frequently?

If you’re still uncertain about your own spirit animal after reading this list, then do a brief meditation before bedtime, and ask your animal guide to reveal itself to you.

Next, make a note of your dreams that night. Did any animal show up? If not, keep doing meditation and recording your dreams until your spirit animal reveals itself to you.
